Overview of Economics

The Department of Economics offers undergraduate degree programs within the College of the Liberal Arts and The Smeal College of Business. Your choice of program should depend upon your interests and post-degree plans. Generally, students majoring in Economics in The Smeal College, will be more interested in executive or administrative careers in business or government. Students majoring in Economics in the College of the Liberal Arts often pursue professional careers in law, politics, teaching, research, or social service.

Major Field and Additional Area Requirements for Economics 2003 through 2006

  1. Economics Courses

    Take all of the following Economics courses (18 credits) - A grade of "C" or higher is required in all ECON courses (including ECON 002 and ECON 004).

    ECON 302 (3) Intermediate Microeconomic Analysis
    ECON 304 (3) Intermediate Macroeconomic Analysis
    ECON 333 (3) International Economics
    ECON 390 (3) Statistical Foundations for Econometrics
    ECON 404W (3) Current Economic Issues [Prerequisite: ECON 302 or ECON 304]
    ECON 490 (3) Introduction to Econometrics [Prerequisite: ECON 390]
  2. Additional Economics Courses

    Take six additional credits of 300/400 level Economics with at least three credits at the 400 level - A grade of "C" or higher is required in all ECON courses.
