The Green Clock Award

The "Green Clock Award" is an award given each semester to the student in Professor Mike Weiner's calculus class(es) with the highest pre-final total grade.  The award actually consists of a certificate of excellence (frameable?) and that semesters green clock which Mike (in the past) brings to class during that semster.  This semester's winner (Fall, 2008) is Chang Lu for Math 140.  Previous semester's winners were Scott Stern, Joe Filer, Lisa Snyder, Dennis Walter, Matt Howard, Dana Figan, Kayleigh Buda (honorable mention), Mike Speer, Shane Smith (not pictured), Zach Newman (honorable mention), Amber Delbaggio, Livingston Miller, Nathan Bowser,Mimi Nguyen,Mark Daley, Joshua Mayhue, Rachael Miller,John Girard, Heather Shylo, Rachel Fiscus, Heidi Long, Matt Monto, Jodi Rodkey & Mandy Sergent.

The History of the Green Clock Award:  When Professor Weiner arrived at the Penn State Altoona campus in 1996 he was used to his classrooms having clocks on the walls.  He did not wear a watch since it made him constantly look at the watch (even when he didn't care what time it was!)  The classrooms in the Smith building did not as yet have clocks and so Professor Weiner bought a $3.00 green clock from Target and brought it to class each day (so he would know when class ended.)  At the end of one semester a student asked if he could have the green clock when the semester ended.  Professor Weiner replied that if the student scored the highest pre-final score in the class he could have the green clock.  Unfortunately that student didn't score the highest score but the student who did get the top score received the green clock.  The rest is history.
