An introduction to higher categories.

Abstract: The subject of higher categories was motivated by questions in different areas of mathematics. Among these, a prominent role was played by homotopy theory. In this talk we give an introduction to higher categories starting with some motivating examples from homotopy theory: the fundamental groupoid and the fundamental bigroupoid of a space. We will then illustrate the general definition of bicategory and discuss further examples. We will conclude with a brief discussion of the higher dimensional case.

We meet weekly on Friday afternoons at Penn State Altoona (and sometimes at Penn State University Park). If you are interested in giving a talk in our seminar please contact one of the coordinators for the Spring 2009 semester: Wojtek Dorabiala and Aissa Wade.
