Transversality and the inverse image of a submanifold with corners

Abstract: In this talk I will discuss the results of a paper from 1981 by Lars Tyge Nielsen. The main theorem of the paper generalizes the Inverse Image Theorem to manifolds with corners. That is, if f:Y --> X is a C^r map that intersects a submanifold A in X transversally, then the inverse image of A under f is a submanifold of Y. When Y and X are manifolds with corners, then the additional assumption that f preserves local facets relatively to A is used.

We meet weekly on Thursday afternoons, with the third meeting of each month in Altoona. If you are interested in giving a talk in our seminar please contact one of the coordinators for the Spring 2006 semester: Aissa Wade and Wojciech Dorabiala.
