The Novikov conjecture for linear groups

Abstract: I will give an overview of the proof (due to Guentner, Wienberger and myself) that linear groups satisfy the Novikov higher signature conjecture. The argument is largely algebraic, but rather than focus on those details in a topology seminar I will concentrate on the geometric group-theoretic issues which arise, including relations to property T and a related conjecture about diffeomorphisms of the circle.
