Mathematics Colloquium
Spring 2006

Wednesday, April 12
Time: 4:00 PM, Location: 140 Hawthorn

Penn State University

Physical Proofs of Mathematical Theorems

Abstract: I will outline a few examples of fruitful interactions of mechanics and mathematics where physical intuition suggests a new proof of a theorem, or even a new theorem. These examples include an apparently new theorem in elementary geometry, a proof of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem using a bicycle wheel and a proof of the Riemann Mapping Theorem using heat flow. If time permits I will mention other examples as well.

If you are interested in giving a talk, please contact Dr. Juan Gil, the Colloquium Coordinator for 2005-2006.
